The new Clackamas County courthouse is complete.

Elected officials, those involved with the project and community members celebrated this milestone during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, May 3.

The courthouse, which cost $313 million and replaces the old building in downtown Oregon City, is located at the Red Soils campus in Oregon City.

According to a press release, the 257,000-square-foot facility has 16 courtrooms, jury assembly and grand jury spaces, 20 judicial chambers, corridors for courthouse users, offices for the district attorney, holding cells, improved prisoner transfer facilities and a law library. It was also seismically retrofitted.

The project was completed through a public-private partnership that involves the county making payments of around $15 million annually for 30 years. Those payments include maintenance and operations costs. The state of Oregon also invested $139.5 million in the work.

“The new courthouse improves safety, as the former courthouse was never designed to have so many courtrooms. Because of that, victims of violence were forced to come into contact in hallways with the same people who committed those crimes,” the press release said. “The new courthouse also creates a more responsive and efficient local justice system, greater measures of safety for victims, and increased accessibility. Another benefit of the new courthouse is its location on the Red Soils campus, placing residents steps away from other important co-located services, such as social services, behavioral health, public health and more.”

The county is discussing plans for the old courthouse, which was built in 1936.
