Athletes hope to qualify for state competition at two-day district meet

With the regular season behind them, the Canby High track and field squad now eyes the Northwest Oregon Conference district meet on Wednesday, May 21, and Friday, May 23, on its home track.

And with that meet, team and individual glory are there for the taking, as well as bids to the Class 5A State Meet within the hallowed confines of Historic Hayward Field in Eugene.

There are three ways for Canby athletes to make it to the state meet. Here’s a look at what they are:

  • Automatic Qualifiers – Top two placers in each individual and relay event at each District Meet automatically qualifies for the State Championships. If there is a tie for second place, it shall be determined by the League prior to submitting the official state championship entries to the OSAA.
  • Qualifying Standards – Championship finalists in individual and relay events at each District Meet who meet the qualifying standard (4th place average of the last four State Championships) for individual events and (3rd place average of the last three State Championships) for relays automatically qualify.
  • Wildcards – There are 5 additional spots for the next fastest times/marks from District Meet finals.
With that, it would appear Canby has a nice batch of athletes who could see their season extended to May 30-31 for this year’s state meet. Let’s take a look at where Canby athletes are ranked heading into district.

With Canby hosting the district meet, the action begins at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, 3:30 p.m. on Friday.

Note: Athletes are limited to four events, including relays. Some athletes ranked in multiple events may not contest those events at the district meet.
